The Royal Hobart Hospital is the tertiary referral hospital for children in Tasmania. The hospital is also the primary teaching hospital for the University of Tasmania School of Medicine. The Paediatric Unit currently accommodates babies, children and adolescents from birth to 18 years of age. It caters for a wide variety of medical, surgical, psychological and mental health conditions.


A remuneration package comprising the Agreement base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiated with the successful applicants dependent on clinical experience and seniority.


Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 to Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 3 in accordance with the Salaried Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Agreement 2019

  • Access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Levels 1, 2 and 3 as described in the Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award.

Period of Employment

Fixed term part-time day work (with on-call), working 38 hours per fortnight commencing 30 August 2021 until 14 March 2022.


Paediatric Department, Royal Hobart Hospital


The Staff Specialist will:

  • Provide clinical services of the highest possible standard to paediatric and adolescent patients and their families in an inpatient, outpatient and ambulatory setting.
  • Promote and participate in research in one of the research focus areas of the Tasmania School of Medicine and Department of Paediatrics.
  • Actively pursue improved outcomes for paediatric and adolescent patients by participating in:
  • Post graduate teaching
  • Audit and Evaluation

An honorary clinical appointment with the University of Tasmania School of Medicine is negotiable.

Essential Requirements

Registration/licences that are essential requirements of this role must remain current and valid at all times whilst employed in this role and the status of these may be checked at any time during employment. It is the employee’s responsibility to ensure that registration/licences remain current and to advise the Employer if their circumstances change. This includes notifying the Employer of any new criminal convictions and/or if a registration/licence is revoked, cancelled or has its conditions altered

  • Specialist or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia in a relevant specialty

  • Current Tasmanian Working with Children Registration

The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre‑employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer. The following checks are to be conducted:
