JOB DESCRIPTION

The Role:
We are seeking a motivated and experienced Consultant in General Medicine which also includes a leadership role of Deputy Clinical Director - Acute Medicine, while working as part of the Department of Medicine across the Region, servicing a population of approximately 116,000.

The successful applicant will have highly developed communication skills, the ability to work collaboratively and working knowledge of performance management, coaching and mentoring.

The department of Medicine has a team of eight general medicine physicians across the region currently providing general medicine services. Six of the physicians have sub-specialties/interests in cardiology, geriatrics, nephrology, and endocrinology.

The Health Service provides both acute and sub-acute general medicine services including a large outpatient service. This position will be attractive to highly skilled and motivated medical professionals who views challenges as opportunities and is driven by a passion to improve healthcare in the complex world of modern health systems. The right applicants will play a key role in developing health care at both patient and system levels.

The Health Service offers a comprehensive undergraduate and graduate clinical training program, with close ties to the University of Tasmania through the Rural Clinical School. As such, you will be responsible for providing leadership and help with the delivery of the Undergraduate general medical education program.

The Service:
The health service has the main acute 160 bed teaching Hospital (with a rural clinical school attached) and a 70 bed Private Hospital, the other acute Hospital is located a short distance away and has 130 beds.

A busy rural regional hospital with a diverse spread of surgical procedures performed including: ENT, Orthopaedic Surgery, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Dental Surgery, Endoscopy, Ophthalmology, ECT and a limited amount of Paediatric Surgery.

The Location:
Located in a beautiful seaport city with a population of 20,000 people, this region is un-spoilt and within easy drive of rugged mountains, spectacular wilderness and sparkling highland lakes. Unpolluted coastal seas and rich fertile soils enable local produce to be some of the world's finest foods.

Skills & Qualifications required:
Specialist or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia in a relevant specialty.

Selection Criteria:
1. Recent experience working as a specialist medical practitioner in a relevant specialty in an
acute setting.
2. Highly developed communication, consultation and interpersonal skills.
3. Demonstrated ability to lead a multidisciplinary team.
4. Knowledge and understanding of continuous quality improvement principles including
employment equity.
5. Knowledge of occupational safety and health principles including maintaining a Duty of Care.
