COMPANY

Our client, Food and Nutrition Science and Technology Capability, a Division of the Department of Defence is based in beautiful Tasmania and boasts state of the art R&D facilities.

The Food and Nutrition (F&N) Science and Technology Capability (STC) within the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) provides Defence with science and technology (S&T) advice on combat ration feeding systems.

The successful candidate will work at the DST Group site located at Scottsdale, Tasmania with the start date planned for July 2021 until July 2022 with the option to extend for another 12 months, until July 2023.

There are two employment options for this assignment. Benefits of employment under a fixed-term tenure by CS Executive Group include paid annual leave, sick leave, and public holidays. Alternatively, under contract-based hours worked a higher hourly rate of pay can be provided through a casual employment contract.


THE ROLE

This role is a contract and will require the successful candidates to work five full days per week.

With tertiary qualifications such as Cert IV, Diploma or a Bachelor Degree, you will need to conduct testing of various food products, provide technical support relating to quality assurance of ration pack components (food and packaging), have a general understanding of safety, and performance requirements of food and packaging of relevance to the Department of Defence, in particular combat ration packs (CRP).

In summary, your duties will involve the provision of technical and professional support in the following areas:

  • Performing food testing and analysis such as compression testing, particle sizing and caking, water activity, pH, colour determination, insoluble residue, texture analysis, and component testing
  • Set up, and run industry-established food testing methods to analyse CRP packaging properties as part of Defence’s Quality Assurance and Quality Evaluation programs.
  • Participate in food evaluation (sensory/taste panel) – voluntary basis
  • Maintain and calibrate equipment
  • Database management
  • Participate in writing and reviewing Standard Operating Procedures, Risk Assessments, and Work Instructions.
  • Support workplace health and safety
  • Be flexible and willing to work on a range of activities

SELECTION CRITERIA

The successful candidate must be flexible and willing to work on a range of activities in order that the work program is achieved both effectively and efficiently. The workforce is small but a diverse range of work is performed.

You must be self-motivated to ensure efficient use of time. You will be willing to work within a team environment with varying degrees of individual effort depending on the task at hand.

A willingness to share knowledge and provide support to other team members is an important element of the job.

To be considered for this position you must meet the following criteria:

  • You MUST BE an Australian citizen! PR IS NOT SUFFICIENT!
  • Have tertiary qualifications, Cert IV, Bachelor Degree or above
  • Experience in quality control of food, sensory and food packaging testing
  • Experience working in a laboratory in a QA/QC role would be highly regarded
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as a team member or individually under general direction.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and a demonstrated ability to complete tasks on time.
  • Competence in the use of computers and computer software, particularly Microsoft Word and Excel, for the purposes of documenting SOPs, recording data, and updating laboratory records.
  • Be willing to undergo an extensive background security check.
