Work environment
The Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment (DAWE) is responsible for protecting Australia's natural resources, agriculture and way of life. We deliver policies and programs that drive strong and sustainable agricultural industries, manage our unique environment and heritage, and support our regional communities.

Our purpose is "Partnering and regulating to enhance Australia's agriculture, unique environment and heritage, and water resources".

The Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) is responsible for Australia's presence and activities in the Australian Antarctic Territory and the Southern Ocean. AAD leads Australia's Antarctic Program. Australia's national interest and vision for future engagement in Antarctica are set out in the Australian Antarctic Strategy and 20 Year action Plan.

The key duties of the position include
The job
As Assistant Secretary for the Policy and International branch, you will be responsible for:

• leading a whole of government approach to Antarctic and sub-Antarctic policy and governance
• contributing to advancing Australia's national Antarctic interests through the Antarctic Treaty system and related agreements, including protecting and conserving the environment and living resources of the region
• guiding and delivering key elements of the Australian Antarctic Division's strategic direction consistent with the Australian Antarctic Strategy and 20 Year Action Plan
• leading and implementing policy, programs, systems and consistent services to address organisational, whole-of-government and industry priorities for Australia's Antarctic Territory, the Heard and McDonald Islands Territory and Commonwealth Bay
• building a capable and strong workforce that delivers on organisational priorities
• collaborating and partnering with internal and external stakeholders to shape services and solutions in line with the evolving priorities in Australia's Antarctic interests
• fostering a high-performance culture, whilst focusing on continuous improvement of employee and organisational performance and continuous communication
• representing the organisation at external forums, meetings, governance committees and in high-level discussions and negotiations with key stakeholders and external organisations
• providing high quality advice and support to the senior executive within the Australian Antarctic Division and the organisation more broadly
• promoting integrity practices by displaying a high level of ethical behaviour in accordance with the APS Code of Conduct, APS Values and APS Employment Principles

Please note that this role is being advertised as either ongoing or non-ongoing. If an offer of non-ongoing employment is made, the successful applicant could be employed for a period of five years in total. The merit pool established through this selection process, which is valid for a period of twelve months from the date the vacancy was advertised in the Gazette, may also be used to fill future ongoing and non-ongoing vacancies where the duties are of a similar nature.
