Duties

  • Operate the HyLogger infrared spectrometer on drill core at the MRT core library with the use of liquid nitrogen as required with an emphasis on core preparation to ensure collection of representative spectra.
  • Maintain optimal operational condition of the Hylogger through an appropriate cleaning regime, adjustments using engineering programs and minor repairs in cooperation with the maintenance provider, including electronic and optical component adjustment or replacement.
  • Perform quality control checks and basic processing on data as provided by dedicated software and ensure raw and processed data are correctly transferred to or created in appropriate network drive locations.
  • Keep a daily operational diary of instrument performance, including detailed notes on problems encountered and method of resolution and maintain data on workflow scheduling and progress against work plan.
  • Undertake routine Core Library activities as required, including cataloguing and curating drill core and samples, maintenance of the Mineral Resources Tasmania TIGER information management system and technical work in accordance with conventional practice and established protocol.
  • Move drill core (manually and with fork trucks) with appropriate assistance as required according to established occupational health and safety practice.
  • Undertake diverse tasks, which may include field work and laboratory duties, under the direction of more senior Mineral Resources Tasmania (MRT) staff.
Essential Requirements

Evidence of the following must be provided prior to appointment to this role:
  • Licence to Perform High Risk Work - Forklift Truck (LF) and Order picking forklift truck (LO)
The person must continue to satisfy the above essential requirements/qualifications throughout their employment in this role.

Desirable Requirements
  • A Certificate IV from a recognised tertiary institution, or an equivalent qualification, appropriate to the nature of the work.
  • an interest in mineralogy and.or geology
  • Experience in obtaining spectral data from rock or mineral specimens
  • Basic electronic/electrical component function and diagnostic knowledge
