Chief Officer

As a member of the Department of Police, Fire and Emergency Management (DPFEM) Executive, Chief Officer of the Tasmania Fire Service and member of the State Fire Commission (SFC), the Chief Officer provides forward looking, values-based leadership that ensures:
  • the minimisation of the social, economic and environmental impacts of fire and other emergencies on the Tasmanian community,
  • the provision of effective strategic advice to Government and
  • the effective administration of the Fire Service Act 1979.
The Chief Officer is responsible for: the strategic and executive management of the Tasmania Fire Service and State Emergency Service across a diverse range of services that are delivered by both employed and voluntary members including emergency planning and preparedness, response and recovery, community fire safety; and exercising strategic command during the management of major emergencies and incidents.

The Fire Service Act requires that applicants have expertise and experience in fire service administration and in the management of fire-fighting operations.

High quality candidates will have relevant tertiary qualifications in one or more of the following: business/management, emergency management, fire management/technology, and experience in leading in a multi-disciplinary portfolio role at a senior executive level; demonstrated strategic planning, community engagement and operational management skills in all aspects of emergency management; and superior knowledge and understanding of best practice in emergency service management, and emergency and disaster planning, prevention, response and recovery.

The successful candidate must demonstrate high personal integrity, high level leadership and change management skills, a proven capacity to develop people in an emergency management environment; and have demonstrated high level capability in communication, influence and negotiation, strategic thinking and problem solving.
