As a Senior Mechanical Technician with the Engineering and Technical Services (ETS) team, you will be an integral member of a small team of six mechanical technicians. The team provides engineering solutions to CSIRO scientific and technical staff as well as supporting other groups both within and outside CSIRO. These include the Marine National Facility (RV Investigator) and the Integrated Marine Observing System, UTAS and the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD).

In addition to the roles performed by all team members within ETS, you will provide additional support for scientific research through high-end machining of complex components and project management. The development of CNC workflow systems and delivery whilst not mandatory is considered highly desirable.

In this role you will:

Provide technical engineering support to research programs.

Design and develop original techniques, processes or equipment.

Oversee the activities of less experienced staff and apprentices and provide on-the-job training.

Run diagnostics to fault find machine errors and rectify poor machine outputs.

Liaise with clients to determine their needs and translate instructions (from engineering drawings to computer commands) through a CAD/CAM package.

Participate in the planning of projects and accept responsibility for carrying out major parts of the project.

Select appropriate methods to perform standard analyses and undertake technical tasks associated with trials, tests, measurements, reviews, and investigations.

Prepare and operate CNC machinery to perform complex machining operations.

Salary: AU$83k - AU$94k per annum, plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will hold a relevant trade certificate in Fitting and Machining, plus a minimum of ~10 years’ experience as a fully qualified Tradesperson. You will also have:

Competencies in manual milling and turning processes

The ability to deliver high quality machined components to a high degree of tolerance.

The ability to work cooperatively in a team environment, as well as independently

Strong organisational skills and a demonstrated ability to effectively prioritise competing tasks to achieve outcomes on time and to specification.

A history of identifying and successfully resolving complex (technical and non-technical) problems or issues.
