Department of Health - Public Health Services - Hobart


Provide leadership on communicable disease control issues within the Communicable Disease Prevention Unit (CDPU), in collaboration with staff, unit managers and with external stakeholders.

Provide high level clinical direction and advice to the Director of Public Health (DPH) and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of PHS on the development, implementation and evaluation of state-wide communicable disease prevention and control programs and other health protection matters.

  • Work closely with the Manager CDPU and CDPU staff, and as a member of the PHS senior management team to set priorities and develop and implement programs, policies and interventions to protect the health of the Tasmanian population.
  • Identify and address emerging public issues relating to communicable disease control and prevention, and environmental health, through collaboration with relevant staff in Health Protection, particularly within CDPU and other stakeholders.
  • Perform delegated statutory functions of the DPH, under the Tasmanian Public Health Act (1997) and other relevant legislation.
  • Provide public health medical advice and operational support to the staff of CDPU.
  • Ensure the Tasmanian health system complies with legislative requirements relevant to communicable disease programs, work collaboratively, and take a proactive role in developing effective linkages, with professional, clinical stream and speciality staff within the Agency. 
  • Monitor intelligence about national and international public health matters, particularly in communicable disease prevention and control, and share information and best practice advice within and beyond PHS.
  • Represent the DPH or PHS through participation in a variety of national, state-wide, local and special public health forums. 
  • Prepare and present public health matters, including education, advice and alerts to the media and community, professional groups and others.
  • Support the delivery of education, training, research and quality improvement activities as part of ongoing operational improvements and professional development of staff in PHS.

Desirable Requirements:

  • Fellowship of the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine, Royal Australasian College of Physicians. 

Essential Requirements:

  • Specialist or limited medical registration with the Medical Board of Australia in a relevant specialty.
