Job Description

The Principal Cyber Security Officer is responsible for providing high level specialist cyber security advice, implementing and managing key projects and initiatives that raise the cyber security maturity within the Tasmanian Government.

The occupant will manage whole of Tasmanian Government cyber security communications, represent the Tasmanian Government position by liaising with local and interstate jurisdictional counterparts to formulate and establish cyber security policies, standards, processes and practices for the Tasmanian State Government.

Period of Appointment

36 months.

Hours per fortnight

Up to 73.5 hours - flexible options available.


  • Prepare high-level correspondence and communication for internal and external audiences, including the Premier, Ministers and other senior Government stakeholders, on complex and sensitive cyber security matters.
  • Develop and support whole of Tasmanian Government cyber security governance processes which includes the development, implementation and reporting of whole of Tasmanian Government cyber security policies and standards for managing cyber security risk.
  • Identify, manage and report cyber security risks that whole of Tasmanian Government suppliers present to the Tasmanian Government.
  • Provide expertise and coordination to ensure the delivery of effective whole of Tasmanian Government cyber security initiatives and services, including the establishment and implementation of local operating procedures and practices.
  • Provide the high level stakeholder engagement and support which includes leading and facilitating inter-agency and inter-jurisdictional cyber security related consultation, reference and technical working groups.
  • Provide high level management advice and support to senior and executive management across the Tasmanian Government, including but not limited to advice on cyber security risks.
  • The incumbent can expect to be allocated duties, not specifically mentioned in this document, that are within the capacity, qualifications and experience normally expected from persons occupying positions at this classification level.

Desirable Requirements

  • Currently hold or be eligible to obtain an Australian Government security clearance to SECRET level.
  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline or research experience to a similar level would be an advantage.
  • Industry recognised accreditation in or training towards accreditation in a related cyber security field would be advantageous.
