What you’ll be doing: Reporting to the VP, Technology you will be responsible and accountable for an existing technology group of around 40 and given the autonomy and investment to rapidly grow their scale over the upcoming two years in Amsterdam. The Director’s responsibilities extend from building and managing a world class digital product development function to leading the engineering design, implementation and integration of new and re-imagined products and platforms. Leading the way in the application of agile, data-driven design and engineering you will create products that are an essential part of the way researchers work. You and your team will be employing the latest thinking and technology in the world of user-centric design, rapid product prototyping, A/B testing, machine learning, big data, and DevSecOps. All must be applicable at pace to service the evolving needs of a large, diverse and demanding global user base. In addition, you’ll be working with the wider technology groups to help continually evolve and embed best-in-class software engineering and operational processes and practice. On a day-to-day basis you will be expected to deliver: The rapid creation and evolution of world-class research products & platforms; Partnering with peers in Product Management to deliver a clear strategic product & technology roadmap; Efficient and effective maintenance of strategically critical products & platforms; The highest standards of support for your production systems; Leadership, expansion and development of a world-class product engineering group; Efficient and effective performance of your group finances and processes. The Director will also function as a Trusted Advisor to colleagues across the business in planning product and technology initiatives and new product discovery. You and your team must lead innovation and manage investment rationalisation by helping streamline the investment portfolio to meet our product development needs and technology evolution. In addition, you must also help set and maintain departmental software design and development principles and strategy and ensure its effective implementation. Working as part of the wider Elsevier Technology organisation, you’ll take responsibility for ensuring the products in your portfolio align with technology strategy, exploiting and exposing shared services and assets widely and appropriately. Likewise, you must lead the way in the identification and adoption of new technologies to that allow ever increasing sophistication, pace and effectiveness of our digital product development capabilities What we are looking for: Strong track record in technology innovation and leadership with significant experience building, leading and managing software product engineering departments (c20 >50 people as a guide), in either a FTSE 100 organisation or leading software house/consultancy organisation; Experience leading the development of multi-discipline teams engineering cross-platform, multichannel products over web, mobile, tablet and desktop; Creation of highly intuitive, engaging and compelling software products, designed and engineered to meet the needs of diverse end-user demographic at global scale; Ability to balance tactical and strategic technology choices between native, cross-platform, and hybrid application development using stacks ranging from Java to JavaScript frameworks on top of distributed micro-services architectures realising highly performant, n-tier, multi-client, multi-platform, on-line and off-line software products; Proven track-record of applying the latest thinking in the application of emerging technology (in particular cross-platform, big-data, machine learning and data visualisation) from architecture and design patterns to implementation strategies and technology selection to rapidly deliver innovation and competitive product advantage to the marketplace; Experience of engineering in a loosely coupled heterogeneous multi-product environment while maintaining consistency and continuity in user experience and workflow; Experience in establishing and maturing modern best-practice agile development methodologies, processes and tools (e.g. Scrum, Kanban, XP, test-driven-development, continuous integration, etc.); Experience working at multiple levels within a large international organization at an executive level and a proven track record of delivery; Strong financial understanding with experience of managing team and project budgets.
